In September 2014 one of my dreams came true—the Climbing Vines Collection, a project I began working on shortly after graduating from Penn in 2012, was published.

The project’s aim was simple: to tell the stories of black women who attended the University of Pennsylvania as undergraduates.

After two years of collecting stories and garnering support from so many students, alumna, and university organizations, it was surreal to see the book in the hands of our guests at the release party in 2014. In that following year almost 400 copies of the book were distributed on and off campus.

Yet with all the work that was done to produce the printed collection, there is still work to be done to ensure not only that these stories don’t get lost, but that we continue to grow the archive of stories for generations to come.

On the 5th anniversary of the Climbing Vines Collection release, the CV team undertook two exciting projects; rereleasing the collection of short stories with new stories, and producing a limited series podcast.

Our mission remains the same—to encourage discussion that promotes mental health, and progressive academic and social experiences for black undergraduate women at Penn, and beyond.

We are so excited to share these projects with you!

Thank you,

Janay Sylvester, Climbing Vines Executive Editor
